A Bathroom Designed to Last: An Aging-In-Place Bathroom Remodel

post img

A bathroom remodel is about more than updating finishes. It’s an opportunity to create a space that works better for your life today and well into the future.

For many homeowners, aging-in-place design is something they don’t consider until later in life. But planning ahead can make a significant difference, especially when it comes to one of the most important spaces in the home: the bathroom.

“A lot of people don’t start thinking about aging-in-place until their 50s,” says Lois Horan, Design Assistant with Foremost Builders. “But some of the best features are things you can incorporate now that simply make a bathroom more comfortable and functional for everyone.”

What Does Aging-in-Place Design Look Like?

A well-designed aging-in-place bathroom doesn’t have to look clinical or institutional. Today’s bathrooms incorporate accessible details that blend beautifully with modern design.

Some of the most impactful features include:

Curbless Showers

One of the biggest considerations for long-term accessibility is the shower. Traditional showers with raised thresholds or tubs can become difficult to navigate over time. A curbless shower creates a smooth transition from the bathroom floor into the shower, making it easier to enter and exit.

For homeowners thinking about wheelchair accessibility, layout becomes even more important. A bathroom needs enough space to accommodate movement, including a 5-foot turning radius for wheelchair users.

A shower bench adds comfort, safety, and flexibility. It provides a place to sit while showering and can make daily routines easier for homeowners with changing mobility needs.

In this project, Foremost incorporated a built-in bench and placed the hand shower nearby, allowing the homeowner to comfortably control the water while seated.

Grab Bars Designed for Today’s Homes

Grab bars are one of the most requested aging-in-place features and typically conjure the feeling of “clinical” or “stale,” but we promise, they have come a long way!

Today’s options are designed to look more like intentional bathroom hardware rather than medical equipment. Available in a variety of styles and finishes, they can blend elegantly with the overall design.

“People don’t want something that looks like it was added later,” explains Lois. “The industry has responded by creating grab bars that feel like part of the design.”

Lighting That Supports Safety

Good lighting becomes increasingly important as we age. Incorporating multiple layers of lighting, including illuminated mirrors and low-level lighting options that can remain dimmed at night, helps improve visibility without disrupting the overall feel of the space.

Materials That Improve Safety

Flooring choices can also make a major difference. Polished materials can become slippery, while textured finishes provide more grip. Smaller tile formats can provide additional traction because of the increased amount of grout lines. Choosing the right material allows homeowners to prioritize safety without sacrificing style.

Creating a Bathroom for Every Stage of Life

For this remodel, the homeowners wanted to create a bathroom that would continue to serve them comfortably for years to come. The original space presented several challenges, including a small, enclosed shower, limited lighting, and fixtures that were not designed with long-term accessibility in mind.

The Foremost team reimagined the space with a larger shower, improved lighting, a lower vanity to accommodate wheelchair access, grab bars, and a more functional layout.

The homeowners still wanted a place where they could enjoy a relaxing bath, so the team replaced the existing tub with an undermount design, eliminating the raised edge to make entry easier.

An Accessible Design Without Compromise

One of the goals of the remodel was to create a bathroom that supported changing needs while still feeling beautiful.

The finished space includes:

  • A spacious curbless shower
  • Built-in shower bench
  • Hand shower positioned for accessibility
  • Rain shower head
  • Rolling shower doors
  • Grab bars integrated into the design
  • Improved lighting throughout
  • Custom natural cherry wood cabinetry
  • Durable Oxford White porcelain tile

A standout detail is the use of stunning dark green Costa Smeralda stone from the tub deck extended through the shower glass into the shower bench, creating a cohesive, high-end look throughout the two wash areas.

“There isn’t one part of this project I would change,” says Lois. “Anyone could come in and use this bathroom and feel comfortable in it and not feel there was a compromise made due to someone being older.”

Planning Ahead Creates More Options

Aging-in-place remodeling isn’t only about preparing for challenges; it’s about creating a home that continues to support the people living in it. By thinking ahead and incorporating features like better lighting, accessible showers, comfortable layouts, and durable materials, homeowners can create spaces that are safer, more functional, and enjoyable for years to come.

Because the best remodels aren’t just designed for how you live today, they’re designed for everything life brings next.
